Jelle De Smet is co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of EYEco eyeCO, a spin-off of UGent and imec that develops digital eyewear as a solution for age-related farsightedness. During his PhD as an engineer at imec / UGent, he developed a method of integrating LCD technology into contact lenses. His research was widely discussed in the media and led to invitations as a speaker at international conferences and the former Google X lab (now X). He was nominated for the Eos Pipet in 2013, a prize for the most promising young researchers in Flanders. After inventing the basis technology of flexible tunable lenses, he raised 1.4 Million euro and co-founded the company EYEco eyeCO in 2016 to further develop the technology and bring the first product to the market. In 2017, he was selected as an MIT Innovator Under 35 Belgium.
